What is Ledger Live Desktop?
Ledger Live Desktop is the version of the Ledger Live companion application that runs on a computer. It is a dashboard, not a wallet: your crypto is on the blockchain, your keys are inside the Ledger device, and Ledger Live Desktop is the screen that lets you work with both in a clear, controlled way.
In short
Think of it as the control panel for your hardware wallet. It reads balances and prepares transactions — your device still has the final word on every approval.
When you open the app you land on a portfolio overview: total value, allocation by asset, and the accounts you have added. From there you can move into a single account to see its balance and full history, look at a transaction in detail, or head to the device section to install coin apps, check storage and update firmware.
Because it runs on a desktop, it suits people who want a larger screen and a keyboard: comparing accounts, reviewing a long transaction queue, reading fees before a transfer, or managing several wallets — a personal one and a business one, for example — from the same installation.
Everything you own remains yours. Ledger Live Desktop cannot move funds on its own, cannot recover a lost recovery phrase and does not keep a copy of it. That is exactly why the phrase you write down at setup must be stored offline and never shared — with anyone, for any reason.

Download officially
Get the installer from the official Ledger site only. Confirm the address in your browser before you open the file.

Install the app on the computer, connect the wallet over USB, choose a PIN and write the recovery phrase on paper.

Ledger Live Desktop scans the device and offers the accounts that belong to it. Add the ones you hold and name them clearly.

Security first
Four rules that prevent almost every loss
Hardware wallets remove an entire class of risk, but they cannot protect against someone who talks you into handing over your recovery phrase. Nearly every reported loss starts there.
- Write the phrase down, offline. Paper or metal, stored where only you can find it. No photos, no cloud notes, no password manager.
- Type the address yourself. Search ads and cloned pages are the usual delivery method for fake installers.
- Approve on the device. If the screen on the wallet does not match the app, stop and close it.
- Treat all support contact as hostile until proven otherwise. Real support never needs your phrase, your PIN, or remote access to your machine.
Red flag: “validate your wallet”
Any site, pop-up or chat that asks you to enter your recovery phrase to “sync”, “migrate”, “unlock” or “validate” a wallet is stealing it. There is no such procedure.
Also worth knowing
A Ledger device shows the transaction details on its own screen before signing. That is your single most reliable check: the computer can be compromised, the device screen cannot be faked by a website.
