Buy crypto with a card or bank transfer through a vetted provider, delivered straight to an account tied to your device.
The app is organised around a simple idea: everything you need to look after self-custodied crypto should be visible in one place, and nothing should move without your hardware wallet confirming it. Below is what each part of Ledger Live Desktop actually does — and where its limits are.

01 — Overview
The first screen answers the question you actually have: what do I hold right now? Ledger Live Desktop totals your accounts into a single figure, splits it by asset and shows how the balance has moved over a chosen period. Accounts are listed underneath with their own balances, so you can go from the whole picture to one coin in a single click.
Balances come from public blockchain data through the app’s network services, so they are an estimate of market value rather than a guaranteed price. During a network hiccup a figure can lag behind; the account itself is unaffected, because nothing about your holdings lives in the app.
If a balance looks wrong, the usual cause is a synchronisation delay or a missing account — not lost funds. The FAQ covers the checks worth doing first.
A Ledger supports an optional passphrase that creates a second, hidden set of accounts from the same recovery phrase. Ledger Live Desktop can display accounts from both, keeping them separate so that a decoy set and a private set never blur together.
This is a powerful feature with a sharp edge: a forgotten passphrase means those accounts are gone. Write it down as carefully as you write down the recovery phrase itself.
02 — Accounts
Ledger Live Desktop works with a broad catalogue of networks — the major chains plus a long tail of tokens, including ERC-20 assets. Accounts are discovered from the connected device, which means the app proposes the accounts that genuinely belong to your wallet rather than asking you to paste an address.
03 — Sending & receiving
This is where a hardware wallet earns its keep. When you build a transaction, Ledger Live Desktop assembles it on the computer, then hands it to the device. The wallet shows the recipient address and the amount on its own screen, and you confirm there — with the physical buttons or screen tap.
The golden rule
If the address on the device screen does not match the one in the app, stop. That mismatch is the signature of clipboard-hijacking malware, and closing the app costs you nothing.
| Option | When it makes sense |
|---|---|
| Slow / economy | No rush; you would rather pay less and wait |
| Medium | Everyday transfers where confirmation within a few blocks is fine |
| Fast / priority | Time-critical moves, or busy periods when the network is congested |
| Custom | You know the current fee market and want to set the rate yourself |
A fee that is too low is not lost — the transaction simply waits, and can usually be sped up or cancelled from the history view.
04 — Services
These are optional conveniences, delivered by third-party providers that integrate with Ledger Live Desktop. The app is the front door, the provider is the counterparty, and the device still signs the result.
Buy crypto with a card or bank transfer through a vetted provider, delivered straight to an account tied to your device.
Convert crypto to fiat with the same providers, with the payout method and rate shown before you confirm.
Exchange one asset for another, comparing quotes and reviewing the rate, spread and network fee first.
Delegate supported proof-of-stake assets, follow rewards and unstake later, without giving up custody.
Fees, availability and eligibility for these services vary by country and are set by the providers, not by the app. Crypto assets are volatile — treat every service as a financial decision you make yourself, not advice from this site.
05 — Device management
Every network you use needs a small application installed on the hardware wallet itself. Ledger Live Desktop is where you install, update and remove them — and where firmware updates are delivered.
Firmware and app updates are initiated from the device section of Ledger Live Desktop. An email, pop-up or website offering you an update file is not part of the process — and the device itself verifies what it installs, so it will reject anything unsigned.
Optional recovery services
Ledger offers an optional, paid subscription that stores encrypted backups of the device secret with third-party custodians and identity verification. It is opt-in, never required, and worth reading about carefully before you decide — the trade-off is convenience against the idea that the phrase exists only on paper in your possession.
06 — Limits
A feature list is only honest if it includes the boundaries. These are the things people wrongly expect — and the expectations scammers exploit.
| Not true | Reality |
|---|---|
| “It stores my coins” | Assets live on the blockchain; the app only displays and prepares. |
| “It backs up my wallet” | Only your written recovery phrase can restore access. The app is not a backup. |
| “Support can recover my funds” | No one can, without the phrase. Any offer to do so is a scam. |
| “I can reset my phrase here” | Phrases are handled on the device only, never inside the application interface. |
The setup guide walks through installation, pairing, accounts and your first verified transfer — and the security page covers the things that keep a wallet safe afterwards.
